A focused approach

Our aim is to provide inspired and authentic yoga to everyone who practice at The Yoga Room. Whether you have been practicing yoga for years or have never rolled out your mat, our intention is to focus on you and your own, personal yoga journey.

Enhance your well-being

A regular yoga practice can be transformational. Take an hour or two out of your week and use yoga to revitalise your body and mind.

Join us and be part of The Yoga Room community

Our classes are smaller and you can expect attention to detail; a focus on you and your yoga development and a feeling of being part of a community. We are firmly rooted within the Vredehoek neighbourhood and seek to give back to everyone who practices with us, as well as the broader community.

The Basics

Are you new to yoga? Then this is the class for you. Expect a slow and steady pace as we work to build a solid foundation for your yoga practice. We will work on healthy alignment and breath awareness and focus on fundamental yoga poses that bring balance, strength and calmness to your being.

Open Level

For the adventurous beginner as well as the experienced yoga practitioner, this is a well-rounded class with elements of flow and holding of poses. You will be guided throughout class to progress into more advanced expressions of poses, or to practice at the level where you feel comfortable. These classes are open to everyone to explore deeper levels of their practice through asana, pranayama and meditation.

Yin Yoga is the practice of slow, long-held, seated or supine asanas that target the fascia in the body in order to increase circulation in the joints and improve flexibility. Our Yin classes are open to all and we leave time within each class to experience inner-quiet, balance and self-reflection.

Yin & Tonic

Everyone is welcome to our combination class to help you detox from the week. Starting with Yin and restorative yoga poses to let the body and mind relax and unwind, we move into a flow to invigorate and energise the body. A great way to clear the mind, de-stress and start the weekend.

Perfect for the older practitioner, this safe and slower-moving class works gently to increase range of motion in shoulders, back, hips and legs and develop better balance, core awareness and breath awareness. A focus on fundamental yoga poses that bring balance, strength and calmness to your being. Ideal for the 60+ age group, but everyone is welcome. No previous experience required.

This class is a great way to help your body recover from childbirth, while bonding with your baby.  It is also an opportunity to connect with other moms and share the experience and insights of raising a child.

In these sessions your baby is part of the class. Classes are designed to work the areas of the body most affected by pregnancy, childbirth and caring for a baby.  No previous yoga experience required.

Elsa Elsa van Niekerk

Elsa van Niekerk

Elsa started practicing yoga in 2006 and completed her 500 hour Teacher Training and Yin Yoga qualification in New York in 2013 at the renowned ISHTA Yoga School. Her classes cater for the individual student by combining the teachings of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda, the ISHTA approach, which emphasises finding the yoga that resonates with the individual’s spirit.

She believes in the transformational power of yoga and meditation and how it positively impacts people’s lives and loves sharing this practice with her students.

Kaya Bryce

Kaya Bryce

Kaya’s approach to her yoga practice and teaching is one that is focused on creating and cultivating a holistic, long-term practice. For her it is all about moving consciously with awareness of what the body can safely do. Her classes are a combination of dynamic flows, with interesting transitions and static postures designed to build strength throughout the body. You can expect intuitive movements linked with breath that take the body and mind on a journey of stretching, strengthening and ultimately rooting down into the body.

She completed her 200 hour teacher training with Jim Harrington in 2014 and is busy with her 300 hour training with Catherine Wilkinson.

Sarah Ojembarenna

Sarah Ojembarenna

Sarah has been a dedicated student of Integral and Hatha Yoga for the past 7 years and completed her Advanced Yoga and Meditation course as a student of Swami Purohit in 2012. She was certified as a Basic Yoga Instructor (Hatha Yoga) by FEDA (Spanish Federation of Aerobics and Fitness) under the guidance of Angelica Solana in 2013.

After moving to Cape Town she continued to practice and study Vinyasa Yoga and completed her 200h teacher training with Jim Harrington in 2014 and advanced teacher training in 2015. She is also a qualified Thai Massage therapist.

Sarah brings playfulness to her classes and believes the heart is at the core of all.

Jane Human

Jane Human

Jane started practicing yoga in 1997, initially in Cape Town with great local Iyengar teachers before continuing her studies in Amsterdam.  She undertook a 4-year yoga teacher training course, practicing and teaching under the watchful eye of Teresa Caldas. This course included annual teacher training retreats with Dona Holleman who wrote Dancing the Body of Light and developed Centered Yoga in Italy.

Jane acquired the Classical Yoga Teacher Certificate in 2004.  This study allowed her to focus deeply on anatomy and the appropriate methods of assisting and correction, the advanced practice of asana and pranayama techniques and the study of the Sutras of Patanjali. Other influences are the Forrest, Anusara Tao and Yin disciplines.

She continues to seek out knowledge of the body, both anatomically and energetically, and apply that to her teaching. Her intention: to help those who attend her classes find their power so they can truly be set free.

Elaine Seidel

Elaine Seidel

Elaine fell in love with yoga in 2001. Her first class made me feel as though I was 5 years old again, it felt so familiar, like a fond memory. Since then she feels honoured to have a continuous, inspiring and nourishing connection with her deepest passion. Yoga is a lifetime journey that always surprises her and she has come to respect that our relationship with our physical body is a phenomenal reflection of our life – and its all there in a yoga class!

She teaches from the heart, inspired by the precision and alignment of Iyengar, the strength and grace of Synergy and the deep core connection of Forrest yoga.
