Release and Renew with Sat Yam Meditation
We love sharing simple, practical techniques that help you feel more balanced and connected to yourself. One of the most powerful yet gentle practices you can try is Sat Yam meditation. Translated as “purification of the heart,” this technique helps to release emotions such as sadness, fear, anger, and disappointment, bringing more spaciousness and lightness to your inner world.
How to Practice Sat Yam Meditation
Find your seat
Sit comfortably on the floor, on a cushion, or in a chair. Lengthen your spine upward while relaxing your shoulders down your back.Ground your hands
Rest your hands, palms down, on your thighs with the thumb and first finger touching. This gesture is grounding and calming.Soften and close your eyes
Let your gaze turn inward. Relax your facial features with a long, soft exhale through slightly parted lips.Connect to your heart
Gently bring your awareness to the heart center. Notice - without judgment - what’s present there. Does it feel heavy, rigid, or murky? Simply observe without attaching a story.Locate the root
Shift your attention to the base of the spine, where many of these emotions are rooted. In yogic philosophy, this is where our Avidya (ignorance of our true nature) resides.Use the mantra Sat Yam
On the inhale, silently repeat Sat as you gather turbulent emotions from the base of the spine and draw them into the heart center, allowing them to be purified.
On the exhale, silently repeat Yam, the mantra of the heart, as you release those emotions upward, out through the crown of the head.
Continue for at least 5 minutes
Stay with the practice, letting the rhythm of breath and mantra guide you. When ready, gently release the mantra.Envision healing light
With awareness still resting in your heart, imagine a radiant emerald-green light glowing within - vibrant, alive, whole, and complete. Allow this feeling of spaciousness to spread throughout your entire being.
The Healing Power of Sat Yam
Sat Yam meditation is not about pushing emotions away, but about allowing them to be seen, acknowledged, and released. Over time, this practice can help dissolve old emotional patterns, ease tension in the heart space, and cultivate a deeper sense of clarity and peace.
If you’re looking for a meditation that is both deeply healing and accessible, give Sat Yam a try. Even a few minutes a day can create a powerful shift in how you carry and process emotions.
