The Power of Stillness: Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ

We live in a world that celebrates being busy. Our days are filled with things to do, decisions to make and constant distractions. It's easy to believe that if we just think a little harder or keep searching, we'll eventually find the clarity we're looking for.

Yoga offers a different perspective. It suggests that clarity doesn't always come from doing more - sometimes it comes from slowing down.

One of the foundational teachings of the Yoga Sutras is:

Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ

Often translated as, "Yoga is the calming of the fluctuations of the mind."

This doesn't mean we stop thinking. Our minds are meant to think. Rather, yoga invites us to change our relationship with our thoughts.

When we move, breathe and pause, we begin to create a little space between ourselves and the constant activity of the mind. Instead of getting caught up in every thought, we learn to simply notice them.

And something interesting happens.

Beneath the mental noise, we often find a steadiness that has been there all along. We gain perspective, we respond rather than react and we begin to see more clearly what really matters.

Stillness doesn't have to mean sitting in meditation for an hour. It can be found in a few slow breaths before a meeting, in the pause before replying to a message, or in the quiet moments of Savasana at the end of class. These small pauses remind us that we don't have to fill every moment.

At The Yoga Room, we believe yoga isn't about escaping life. It's about learning to meet it with greater clarity, presence and ease. That sometimes the answers we're looking for aren't found by doing more, but found in the quiet. Come find your moment of stillness by joining a class this week.
